Minimizing The Consequences Of A Theft Arrest

In Texas, theft may be charged as a felony or a misdemeanor, depending on the amount or value stolen. Within the tiers of misdemeanor theft, we can also work to minimize the charges and their penalties. From shoplifting to minor thefts, the tiers of Class A through Class B are as follows:

• Class A misdemeanor: The amount stolen totals between $500 and $1,500. Penalties include up to a year in county jail and/or fines of up to $4,000.
• Class B misdemeanor: The amount stolen is between $50 and $500 (additional guidelines exist for crimes involving checks). Penalties include up to 180 days in county jail and/or fines of up to $2,000.
• Class C misdemeanor: The amount stolen is less than $50. Penalties include fines of up to $500.
